Is Latin really a dead language?

  • While not many people speak Latin or know how to read or write it, the language remains one of the world’s most significant. It is found in a large number of the world’s most used languages, including English, French, Italian, Spanish, and other romance languages. These newer languages borrow many of the sounds—called roots—for their own words to use! We also see Latin in other forms, such as common sayings, pop culture references, and scientific and legal definitions.
